Divine Soul Purpose: Three Steps To Discovering What Lights You Up

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.

What Is My Soul Purpose?

The fulfillment of our soul’s purpose here on this planet requires the embodiment of our soul’s essence and our soul’s gifts.

It’s the reason that each of us is here–to connect with our soul’s gifts and somehow figure out how to express them through our physical body onto the physical plane.

We’ve got help.

There’s a way in which life is constantly drawing us in the direction of soul healing and living our purpose.

And, for most of us, there are ways in which we’re resisting that pull.

How do we block ourselves from finding and living our soul purpose, and what can you do to help align ourselves with it?

When we are aligned there’s a natural process of unfolding in us that progresses through three phases.

That’s what we’ll be talking about in this blog post and more.

What Is Your Soul?

We’ve all asked ourselves at one time or another who are we and why we are here on this planet.

In answer to the first question I’ll quote Wayne Dyer who said, “You are not a physical being, you are a spiritual being having a physical experience.

In other words, we are a soul in physical form.

Our soul is the part of us that, even as our body is shed, does not change.

There are certain qualities, characteristics and gifts that our soul has that are immutable.

Our task as humans is to connect to the spiritual part of us and embody it so that we can share those immutable gifts through our physical bodies and onto this physical plane.

If our spirit or soul was embodied so, our thoughts and actions would naturally result in our living our soul’s purpose.

However, as we come into the womb and this world, we find that automatically living our purpose would threaten our safety because almost no one around us is expressing their soul’s gifts, and because we rely on those around us for our survival, we adopt the same way of being.

What Prevents Us From Living Our Soul Purpose?

Entraining To Our Caregivers

2 to 4 weeks after concept, the fundamental layer of our nervous system comes online.

This primal nervous system gathers information by feeling into the energetic milieu that it finds through a process of direct information exchange called entrainment.

It’s gathering information about how to do this human thing.

An then it adopts what it finds and builds it into us.

That’s how our parents, the culture we are born into, religion, and many other factors, mold who we become.

But who we become as a result is usually not in tune with who we are on the deepest level–the soul level.

Other Disconnecting Factors

disconnected soul purpose

What happens when we entrain to our caretakers and the larger culture creates the foundation that keeps us from living our purpose, but the effect of basic, essential factors that keep us under-resourced and in survival mode can’t be ignored.

Food

Your diet can make living your purpose easier or harder.

The fuel you put into your body is what builds it.

When you feed it good fuel, your body is ready to face the world.

When you use poor fuel, you don’t allow it to function at its best.

Sleep

Sleep is another factor that is required for a healthy body that is ready to move forward.

Regular, healing sleep is necessary for optimal growth.

In a world that is always busy, lack of sleep is a huge problem.

Medication

Medications can also make living your passion more difficult.

While each person needs to decide what is best for their circumstances, it is important to understand that these things alter your mind.

For example, anti-depressants are designed to dull the bad feelings a person is experiencing.

On the other end of the spectrum, they also dull the good emotions.

This makes it difficult to experience the full extent of your passion.

Self-medication

Self-medication is yet another factor in disconnecting us from our soul purpose.

Things like alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana dull the senses and alter the mind in a way that masks true passion.

How do we find our soul purpose then?

How To Find Your Divine Soul Purpose

Here’s a video I made on the subject:

Connect To Your Body

Different parts of our spine house different aspects of our being.

The upper back/lower neck is a part of us that connects us to what feels true and right.

If we’re connected to that sense then we can draw healthy boundaries and say yes when we mean yes and no when we mean no.

It also connects us to passion and what lights us up.

If we’ve disconnected from this area, we are less likely to trust what feels true and right and more likely to doubt–less likely to be connected to that sense of passionate knowing that we all have in us.

Get Curious

Ask yourself what lights you up.

What do you feel called to do?

Often this thing can be found in the things you do outside work.

Too often this is the thing that gets pushed to the bottom of your to-do list or doesn’t make it at all.

If you can feel that passion, you are on the correct path.

Following that feeling can help you avoid those dead ends that have you stuck or going in circles.

It’s the “bliss” that Joseph Campbell referred to when he suggested, “follow your bliss.”

Following our bliss is easier said than done, especially if it wasn’t modeled to us by the family or culture at large that we were conceived into and, thus, we learned to judge that part of ourselves as wrong.

How To Know Your Soul Purpose

The best advice I have heard regarding knowing your soul purpose comes from Eckhart Tolle.

In his book A New Earth, he states that the best thing you can do is to have at least part of your attention resting on the sensations in your body at all times.

Examining the feelings inside your body will allow you to know whether you are going in the correct direction or heading for a dead end.

Life is always nudging you in the correct direction and often the message that you are going in the wrong direction comes through as pain.

Feel any discomfort and ask yourself what message it is trying to convey.

Source flows through your body and the more time you spend focusing on the feelings, the greater your connection to Source becomes.

This leads you to your soul purpose.

Either way, the truth is that you can’t mess it up.

You came here to do this and the universe is helping you along as much as possible.

Embodying Your Purpose

When we commit to bringing our attention to the sensations in our body, the process of our evolution naturally unfolds.

This evolution causes us to change the way we think and feel and behave.

Essentially we become a different person.

It happens in three phases: 1) Our nervous system learns how to connect and let go of tension, 2) Our nervous system learns to use the energ bound in tension as a resource, and 3) our nervous system uses the energy as a portal to soul.

Here’s a video series I made on the three stages to embodying your purpose roadmap:
